Petition for the protection of our Natural Health

Dear Sir/Madam,

The European Parliament and the Council of Ministers of the European Union have just ratified a catastrophic decision which directly hits consumers. Indeed this text forbids the sale of food supplements.

Such a move essentially benefits a few large multinational companies in the pharmaceutical and agri-food sectors.

This implies that only the EFSA (European Food Safety Agency) shall be empowered to market products with therapeutical allegations. This is one more step towards the disappearance of any alternative treatments for 'health consumers'.

This text substantially forbids 90% of therapeutical allegations for food supplements. Among the 4,637 allegation dossiers which have been filed, the EFSA has authorised 222. Among the three existing control procedures, this official Authority has only used one : the most restrictive.

We do not want a Europe from which democratic debates would be excluded.

Nor do we want a Europe which goes against our fundamental Rights, notably our free access to information, and our right to seek other kinds of healthcare.

Members of the European Parliament, being directly elected by the citizens of the Union, must take care that measures taken by European Authorities do not harm the physical, nay psychical integrity of consumers.

I therefore earnestly ask you to reinvigorate the policy debate on the question of therapeutical allegations, notably in order to :

1. Alter the role of EFSA in the European decision-making process, by including sanctions should any Authority go beyond the terms of reference that were imposed on it ;

2. Integrate the right to seek other kinds of healthcare into the European legal health system ;

3. Restore balance to European positions pertaining to health allegations.

Yours respectfully,
